BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 11 Muharram 1448 / 27 June 2026 – The Brunei History Centre (PSB), through its Borneo Research Centre Division (penBORNEO), has organized the Second Historic Borneo Island Project under the theme “Exploring the History of Borneo". The two-day program runs from 27 to 28 June 2026. This initiative represents PSB's ongoing commitment to strengthening and expanding its role in preserving, researching, and disseminating knowledge related to the history of Borneo. It also aims to introduce and broaden the reach of penBORNEO as a reference and research hub, while providing a platform for sharing knowledge on history, heritage, culture, and the development of Malay civilization in the region.
The project coincides with the Official Opening Ceremony of the penBORNEO Exhibition Gallery and the Borneo Maps Exhibition, held on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at 9:00 a.m. The penBORNEO Exhibition Gallery highlights the division's roles, services, efforts, and achievements since its establishment. Meanwhile, the Borneo Maps Exhibition showcases rare and hard-to-find maps, which serve as invaluable historical references in understanding the island's history, geography, and civilization.
The Guest of Honour officiating the opening ceremony was Yang Mulia Dr. Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Also in attendance were Encik Abdul Munir Lutfi bin Said, Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam; Mr. Agus Buana, Head of Chancery and Director of Social and Cultural Affairs, representing the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia; along with department heads, senior officials, government and private sector staff, academics, and students from higher education institutions.
The program was further enriched by the 14th Series of the Borneo History Lecture, featuring two distinguished panelists. The first was Dr. Awang Haji Abdul Karim bin Haji Abdul Rahman, former Deputy Principal of the Brunei History Centre, a historian, researcher, and prolific writer. The second was Dr. Chun Sheng Goh, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Asian Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, an active researcher in sustainable development in Borneo, particularly in areas related to land use, energy, border regions, and identity.
The project aspires to raise public awareness of the importance of Borneo's history, foster appreciation for cultural heritage, and strengthen the identity of future generations. It also serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, contributing to the preservation and sustainability of historical treasures in line with the evolving civilization of the Borneo region, especially among youth, researchers, and history enthusiasts.
