LAMBAK KANAN, Saturday, 18 April — Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, emphasizes harmony, balance, and simplicity. This refined practice often features a minimalist use of flowers combined with branches and leaves, with particular attention given to lines and spatial composition.

In line with this tradition, the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam hosted an Ikebana Workshop yesterday afternoon at the Lifelong Learning Centre (L3C), Ministry of Education.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Haji Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, who attended as the guest of honour. Also in attendance was His Excellency Kikuta Yutaka, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Brunei Darussalam.

A total of 40 participants had the opportunity to learn and experience the art of Ikebana under the guidance of a certified Sogetsu Ikebana instructor from Japan.

The workshop was conducted by Taniguchi Chieko, who began her studies in Sogetsu Ikebana in 1984 and has since dedicated herself to refining her techniques and artistic sensitivity.

Taniguchi has contributed significantly to the education of younger generations by teaching Ikebana at a professional school specializing in floral business, as well as conducting classes for diplomats at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Beyond her work in Japan, she has also participated in international demonstrations and teaching activities in Shanghai and Beijing, sharing the beauty and philosophy of Ikebana with wider audiences.
