The Department of Community Development (JAPEM), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) held the International Women's Day Celebration 2026 at Dar Al-Intishar, Jerudong Sports Complex.
Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by welcoming remarks by Yang Mulia Dayang Fauziah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Acting Director of the Department of Community Development as Chairperson of the ceremony.
In her remarks, she stated that the International Women's Day celebration serves as an important platform to recognise the contributions and achievements of women across various fields of national development. She emphasised that this year's theme, “Protect, Enable and Empower: Advancing Women in Society," reflects Brunei Darussalam's commitment to strengthening the protection, well-being and development opportunities for women and girls. She also highlighted the findings of the Research on Women's Development in Brunei Darussalam, which indicate encouraging progress in women's participation in education and the workforce. At the same time, the research underscores the importance of strengthening support for working women while recognising the vital role of women within the family and the wider community. The findings will also serve as a foundation for the development of the 2026-2030 Women's Plan of Action aimed at further empowering the role of women in the family, community and national development.
The ceremony then proceeded with the launch of the Executive Summary Publication of the Research on Women's Development in Brunei Darussalam, officiated by the Guest of Honour.
The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of the Executive Summary to the Members of the Legislative Council; members of the Special Committee on Family Institution, Women and Children; the National Council on Social Issues (Majlis Kebangsaan Isu Sosial-MKIS); and the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies. This document serves as a key reference in efforts to strengthen women's development initiatives and programmes in the country.
The Executive Summary Publication of the Research on Women's Development in Brunei Darussalam, launched during the ceremony, is available to the public in digital format through the official website of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) as a reference to support efforts in strengthening women's development initiatives in the country.
The ceremony concluded with the recitation of Doa Kesyukuran in conjunction with International Women's Day, as well as the Doa Allah Pelihara Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam, led by Yang Mulia Ustaz Awang Mohammad Shahrin Bin Sulaiman, Head Religious Teacher at the Department of Community Development. International Women's Day, celebrated annually on 8 March, is an important occasion to recognise the contributions and achievements of women around the world. The year 2026 marks the 13th time that Brunei Darussalam commemorates this celebration.
Also, in attendance were Yang Berhormat Dayang Chong Chin Yee, Member of the Legislative Council of Brunei Darussalam, Yang Mulia Awang Ajman bin Haji Meludin, Permanent Secretary (Civil Service Governance) Prime Minister Office, Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari, Permanent Secretary (Community), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; Yang Mulia Dr. Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; members of the Special Committee on Family Institution, Women and Children, MKIS members, senior government officers as well as invited guests.
