BERAKAS, Monday, 22 Rejab 1447 / 12 January 2026 – The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, through the Department of Youth and Sports, will be sending a delegation comprising sixteen youths and one National Leader to represent Brunei Darussalam at the 49th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP). The program will take place over thirty-five days, beginning on 14 January and concluding on 17 February 2026 in Tokyo, Japan.
The Flag Handing Ceremony for the Brunei Darussalam Delegation to the 49th SSEAYP was held at the Simpur Room, Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. The ceremony was graced by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who officiated the handing over of the national flag.
The event commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and a prayer led by Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad Hazwan Nizam bin Ibrahim, followed by an address delivered Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The ceremony continued with the presentation of the national flag by the Minister to Yang Mulia Awang Ibrahim bin Sabli, the National Leader of the Brunei Darussalam Delegation to SSEAYP 49. This was accompanied by the handing over of flight tickets to the National Leader by Ms. Miura Keiko, Deputy Chief of Mission and Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam. The ceremony also featured a pledge by the Brunei Darussalam Delegation and concluded with a group photo session with the guest of honour.
The Brunei Darussalam Delegation consists of eight male and eight female participants aged between 18 and 30 years. They are led by Youth Leader Yang Mulia Awang Muhammad Irham bin Awang Roslan, assisted by Deputy Youth Leader Yang Mulia Dayang Berlyanna Indah Yordhana binti Jefry.
During the program, six key themes will be discussed: Quality Education; Economic Growth and Sustainable & Responsible Tourism; Global Environment and Climate Change; Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery; Social Welfare and Inclusion; and Digital Society and Artificial Intelligence. These themes were selected from the Implementation Plan of the Joint Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Trusted Partners, which was adopted during the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit marking the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation on 17 December 2023 in Tokyo, Japan.
This year's edition of the program will include port-of-call visits to Thailand and Singapore, featuring engagements with national leaders, homestay programs with host families, interactive sessions with local participants, field studies, and other enriching activities.
The program aims to foster friendship and mutual understanding among youths from Japan and ASEAN member states, particularly Brunei Darussalam. It also seeks to broaden the perspectives of young participants, strengthen international cooperation, and enhance practical skills for global collaboration. Ultimately, the initiative aspires to nurture future leaders capable of applying their leadership skills across diverse fields in an increasingly globalized society.
