TEMBURONG, Sunday, 4th Jamadilawal 1447 / 26th October 2025 – In celebration of the 58th ASEAN Day, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Embassies and High Commissions of ASEAN Member States in Brunei Darussalam, and the Temburong District Office under the Ministry of Home Affairs, organized the ASEAN Sports Day 2025 at the Temburong Sports Complex today, themed “Sports, Heritage and Unity."

 

The event was graced by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, as the Guest of Honour.

 

Also, in attendance were heads of ASEAN missions in Brunei Darussalam; Yang Berhormat Members of the Legislative Council; Permanent Secretaries of MCYS; and the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

 

The programme began with a prayer and an official opening ceremony led by the Guest of Honour, followed by warm-up session and aerobics. A 1.2-kilometre group walkathon was then held, with the Guest of Honour joining the participants.

 

Among the featured activities during ASEAN Sports Day were netball matches, six-a-side football games, and an open men's tug-of-war competition. The event also showcased traditional games performed by the Mukim and Village Consultative Councils from the Temburong District, such as Selipar Panjang and Sugang, along with an exhibition of traditional foods from ASEAN Member States and Timor Leste.

 

A total of four teams participated in the six-a-side football matches: Team MCYS, Team MoFA, Team Temburong District Office, and Team ASEAN. Meanwhile, three teams competed in the netball matches: Team MCYS, Team MoFA, and Team Temburong District Office. The event concluded with a prize presentation ceremony for the netball, football, and tug-of-war competitions, as well as a lucky draw.


ASEAN was established on 8th August 1967, and ASEAN Sports Day is celebrated to strengthen friendship and foster unity, mutual understanding, and cooperation among the ASEAN community.

 

This year's ASEAN Sports Day reflects the collective commitment of ASEAN Member States, as agreed during the ASEAN Ministers of Sports Meeting, to hold the event annually under the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports. It also highlights Brunei Darussalam's dedication to ASEAN through peace, harmony, and inclusive community development via sports and cultural platforms.

 

The presence of the public, including members of the ASEAN community in Brunei Darussalam, enlivened this year's celebration with a spirit of sportsmanship, cultural appreciation, and regional solidarity. This marks the fourth edition of ASEAN Sports Day and the first time it has been held in the Temburong District.​
