BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Monday, 14 July – Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) is now open for public registration for the upcoming Republic of Türkiye Calligraphy Course (Riq'ah Script) and Traditional Turkish Paper Marbling Art Course, also known as Ebru.
His Excellency Professor Dr. Hamit Ersoy, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Türkiye to Brunei Darussalam, delivered a welcoming speech during the presentation and interactive demonstration of Riq'ah Calligraphy and Ebru Art at BKISHHB. He announced that the public may now apply to participate in the six-month courses, with registration closing on 31 July 2025.
"Organized by BKISHHB and facilitated by the Yunus Emre Institute in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye, these courses—commencing on 4 August 2025—offer the public an opportunity to explore the rich traditions, arts, and culture of the Republic of Türkiye," His Excellency further stated.
Ms. Lale Ersoy, Director of the Yunus Emre Institute in Brunei, explained that while calligraphy encompasses various styles, Riq'ah is distinguished by its aesthetic and functional qualities. Historically used as an official form of correspondence within the Ottoman Palace for centuries, it holds significant scholarly and cultural value.
Ms. Lale also highlighted that although Ebru appears solely as a visual art, it is deeply rooted in spirituality and has been practiced by many artists as a form of meditative remembrance.
The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Mohd. Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan, Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Proceedings began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Awang Muhammad Haziq Ariffin bin Haji Muskapah, an Arabic Language Research Officer under the Public Service Apprenticeship Scheme (SkiPPA), BKISHHB.
Also in attendance was Acting Director of BKISHHB, Pengiran Mohammad Jeffrynul Hafli bin Pengiran Haji Ali, who gave a welcoming address.
The event continued with live demonstrations of Riq'ah Calligraphy and Traditional Turkish Paper Marbling by Ms. Lale Ersoy, followed by an additional calligraphy demonstration by Dayang Nurlina Shazlina binti Haji Ali, an Arabic Language Research Officer under SkiPPA, BKISHHB.
Last year, the Yunus Emre Institute, in collaboration with the Turkish Embassy, engaged in joint initiatives with various governmental and academic institutions. These included language courses, storytelling events, film screenings, and culinary programs featuring Turkish cuisine, which were broadcast on the national network, Radio Television Brunei (RTB).
Cultural and culinary programs continue to be organized regularly by the Yunus Emre Institute in cooperation with the Turkish Embassy, with announcements shared via social media platforms.
