BERIBI, Sunday, May 11 – The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC) marked its 77th anniversary with a commemorative ceremony held today at the atrium on the first floor of the Annajat Complex in Beribi.
The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, who attended as the guest of honor.
In her welcoming speech, BRC President, Dayang Lailatul Zubaidah binti Haji Mohd. Hussain, shared the history and progress of the organization over the past 77 years. She highlighted a significant achievement—the incorporation of BRC as a statutory body within the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam in 1990. Since then, the society has played an auxiliary role to the government of His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
"The primary role of this organization is not limited to providing voluntary emergency assistance and ensuring the safety of lives and property during wartime, disasters, and pandemics. Even in times of peace and stability, we continue to strengthen the community in various fields, such as public health, mental health, disaster preparedness, and humanitarian aid for those affected by ongoing issues and crises," she remarked.
"Our fundamental duty is to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need at all times."
She also emphasized BRC’s vital contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in frontline volunteer efforts to support the Ministry of Health. The society also initiated the COVID-19 Volunteer Group in collaboration with government agencies, the private sector, and other NGOs.
This year’s theme for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, Dayang Lailatul Zubaidah further explained, brings global humanitarian concerns to the forefront. With increasing violations of human rights, international humanitarian law faces mounting challenges.
The ceremony continued with the presentation of official appointment letters and accreditation certificates. These included:
Appointment Letters and Rank Accreditation Certificates for the Governing Board Members (2024–2029),
Appointment Letters for the National Council Members (2025–2027),
Accreditation Certificates for Certified First Aid Training Agencies under the Red Crescent Academy of Brunei Darussalam.
The event concluded with a donation handover ceremony for the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund for Gaza 2023, contributed by BRC to the guest of honor.
