​ Celebration and Appreciation Event for the Day of Action Campaign in Conjunction with International Volunteer Day 2024

KUALA BELAIT, Sunday, 6th Jamadilakhir 1446 / 8th December 2024 – Brunei Darussalam, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports (MCYS), particularly the Department of Youth and Sports (DYS), successfully​​ organized the Day of Action Campaign in conjunction with the International Volunteer Day 2024, held simultaneously in all four districts today.


International Volunteer Day is mandated by the United Nations and is held annually on December 5th. This day provides a unique opportunity for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, share, and promote their work, and contribute to peace and development by supporting the recognition of volunteers and collaborating with partners to integrate volunteering into development programs.


The celebration of International Volunteer Day aims to provide a platform for gathering the community of Brunei Darussalam to foster the spirit of volunteerism, symbolizing unity and effort across various levels of society towards change through collective and cooperative approaches.


The main objectives of the celebration are to bring together the community to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism, to appreciate volunteers and organizations active in volunteer work through the use of the Mengalinga app, and to strengthen the culture of unity among the community in carrying out beneficial work and understanding the concept of volunteerism through organized activities.


In conjunction with the celebration, the Celebration and Appreciation Event for the Day of Action Campaign was held at the Mumong Sports Complex, Belait District.


Attending as the Guest of Honor was the Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, Minister of Development.


Also attending as the Special Guest was the Honorable Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports. Joining the Day of Action (DOA) activities in Belait District were Yang Mulia Awang Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin, Permanent Secretary (Youth) MCYS; Yang Mulia Dr. Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) Ministry of Development; Yang Mulia Sr. Dayang Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Mohd Yaakub, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Construction Industry and Development) Ministry of Development; Yang Mulia Dayang Aldila binti Haji Mohamad Salleh, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate and Legal) Ministry of Development; as well as senior officers from MCYS and the Ministry of Development.


The event's program began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Qayyum bin Haji Aminnuddin, Imam of RPN Kampung Pandan Mosque, followed by a welcoming speech from Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim, Director of Youth and Sports as the Chairperson of the event. The presentation of certificates and plaques of appreciation to the five (5) Mengalinga App Trailblazers for the 2023-2024 session was officiated by the Guest of Honor, while the presentation of certificates and plaques of appreciation to the five (5) Mengalinga App Highflyers for the 2023-2024 session was officiated by the Special Guest.


To further enliven the celebration, various side activities were held around the Mumong Sports Complex area, such as the Back to School Donation Handover to ten (10) recipients, officiated by the Guest of Honor, walkway painting, flower planting, and Self Practical Defensive Driving.


The Guest of Honor also participated in the Day of Action Campaign activities at the Kampung Pandan Community Hall, organized by IBTE Agro-Technology, Wasan, which included the Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Program. The Guest of Honor then moved to the Kampung Pandan Skate Park to join the Mural Painting and skate park area painting activities organized by the Youth of the Village Consultative Council (MPK) Pandan.

For the Brunei and Muara District, the Day of Action Campaign activities began at the Kampong Lambak Mosque. The Guest of Honor for the event was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Rosli bin Haji Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Religious Affairs. Also present was Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Rosli bin Pengiran Haji Halus, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture), MCYS and other senior officers from MCYS.


The event began with the congregational Fardhu Subuh Prayer led by Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad bin Haji Bagol, Mosque Affairs Officer and Imam of Kampong Lambak Mosque, followed by a religious talk delivered by Yang Mulia Ustaz Haji Awang Muhammad Najib bin Haji Awang, Religious Development Officer from the Islamic Da’wah Centre.


The event continued with the handover of cleaned prayer garments and mosque equipment organized by the Suppliers Association and the recitation of Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam led by the Imam of Kampong Lambak Mosque. Activities included an aerobics and brisk walking session, planting commemorative trees, and a mosque surroundings cleanliness campaign.


Subsequent activities took place at the Dewan Masjid Perdana Wangsa Haji Mohammad, Kampong Setia, with the Back to School Program with UNISSA organized by the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University Student Representative Council (UNISSA). Other activities were held at the Youth Centre, Bandar Seri Begawan, including a Jet Ski Exhibition by the Brunei Jet Association; Menapih Sinjang dan Menambat Dastar workshop ​organized by the BERSATU Association; Basic A​rchery Workshop organized by the Setia Bersatu Archery Club; Basic Jawi Calligraphy Writing Workshop organized by the Brunei History Centre; Phase II Basic Kayaking Skills Workshop run by the Kayak Association; Scriptwriting Workshop conducted by the Putra Seni Group; and Advanced Photography Workshop organized by the Brunei Darussalam Photographers Association.


The highlight of the event included a mural painting activity for the Day of Action Campaign organized by the Brunei and Muara District Cub Scouts; planting trees and signing a commemorative sheet organized by the Youth Centre staff; certificate presentation ceremony; congregational Fardhu Zohor Prayer; and the launch of a convoy delivering basic food donations to five (5) families organized by the National Youth Volunteer Alumni, Single Mothers Association, Brunei and Muara District Girl Guides Association, Project Bina Bakti Group, and Brunei University Muslimah Group.

Meanwhile, in the Tutong District, the Day of Action Campaign activities took place at the Tutong Sports Complex. The Guest of Honor was Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Farida binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, Permanent Secretary (Energy) Prime Minister's Department. Also present was Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari, Permanent Secretary (Community) MCYS along with other senior officers from MCYS.


Among the activities conducted were an aerobics session at the Grandstand area, Tutong Sports Complex; followed by a brisk walk to the Seedling Area, Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) Tutong for flower seed planting; the Guest of Honor then moved to the Youth Section Building, JBS Tutong for the Let’s Clean, Let’s Green with IMPAK! activity and flower planting organized by IMPAK and JBS Tutong. The Guest of Honor later proceeded to the Open Field and Tutong District Scout Training Centre to participate in the Green Program and canvas painting for the Day of Action Campaign. The final event was held at the Language and Literature Bureau Tutong for the Back to School activity and coloring competition.

In Temburong District, the Day of Action Campaign activities began at the Community Hall Area, RPN Kampung Rataie. The Guest of Honor was Yang Mulia Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Alirupendi bin Haji Perudin, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defense. Also present was Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan, Permanent Secretary (Culture) MCYS along with other senior officers from MCYS.


The program began with an aerobics session conducted by the National Service Program (PKBN), followed by the Think Green campaign - a cleanliness campaign at the Children's Playground and community hall area organized by JASTRe Temburong, Temburong Fire and Rescue Department, PKBN, and MPK RPN Kampung Rataie. The Guest of Honor then moved to the RPN Kampung Rataie Mosque Area for the Tree Planting activity - planting flowers and cleaning the mosque area. The Guest of Honor also participated in the Kami Peduli initiative, which involved distributing essential food aid and cleaning homes organized by the Community Development Department (JAPEM), PKBN, and MPK STKRJ Kampung Rataie.


The Guest of Honor then proceeded to the Language and Literature Bureau Temburong to join the Mini DBP Festival and Back to School Donation activity, which involved distributing school supplies to selected orphans in Temburong District and canvas painting organized by JAPEM Temburong, DBP Temburong, and Belia Permata Hijau. Finally, the Guest of Honor moved to the Bangar Community Field to participate in Glamping Permata Hijau, a casual camping activity with side activities organized by the Temburong District Scout Association, GHB Campers, Family Camping Brunei (FCB), and Brunei Campers.

The Volunteer Activity Marathon started on 11th November 2024 and will continue until 31st January 2025. More than 100 activities have been scheduled so far for the 2024 Day of Action Campaign nationwide, involving various government agencies, private sectors, youth associations/movements, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Village Consultative Councils (MPKs), and schools. Registration to participate in the Day of Action Campaign activities opened from 12th September 2024 until 16th January 2025. Information about the Day of Action Campaign activities can be obtained through the Mengalinga app and Instagram accounts @jbs.bn, @dayofaction.brunei, and @hab.belia.
