BALI, REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA, Friday, 12 Rabiulawal 1447 / 5 September 2025Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports attended the CHANDI Ministerial Summit with the theme: “Culture for the Future" hosted by Republic of Indonesia. CHANDI Ministerial Summit was officiated by His Excellency Professor Dr. Pratikno, Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Republic of Indonesia. The Ministerial Summit was attended by 44 countries including Brunei Darussalam and chaired by His Excellency Dr. Fadli Zon, Minister of Culture, Republic of Indonesia.

 

CHANDI Ministerial Summit 2025 served as a discussion platform that brought together countries that focused on six (6) main thrusts, namely Culture, Heritage, Arts, Narrative, Diplomacy and Innovation towards addressing global challenges.

 

Yang Berhormat Dato, in his speech, emphasized that culture is not merely a supplement to development, but an asset and a key foundation for peace, sustainability, and national identity. Yang Berhormat Dato further shared that at the national level, culture has been integrated into the Brunei Vision 2035 and the Strategic Plan under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports which prioritizes the development of the cultural and creative industries, the strengthening of heritage, the digitization of cultural assets and the active involvement of youth. At the international level, Brunei Darussalam is proud to join Malaysia, Singapore, the Republic of Indonesia and Thailand in recognizing the nomination of Kebaya under the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List category. CHANDI 2025 opens up more opportunities for similar initiatives in other cultural and artistic domains, particularly in advancing cultural and creative industries.

 

The participating countries further endorsed the Bali Cultural Initiative Declaration 2025: "Culture for the Future" which declared a shared commitment to promoting cultural diversity, safeguarding heritage, and advancing cultural diplomacy as a means to achieve sustainable and inclusive global development.

 

Accompanying Yang Berhormat Dato were Yang Mulia Dr. Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Walsalfelah, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; and senior officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei Darussalam.
